Central Artesia is about 7.9 miles from our Paramount Boulevard shop, roughly 13 minutes without traffic. The city is 16,395 people, hemmed in by Cerritos on three sides and Norwalk to the north. What makes it different for HVAC is that one commercial street carries so much of its working life: a failed rooftop unit on Pioneer can shut a dining room.

How does a visit work in a city of 1.62 square miles?

Simply: you call, we come over from Paramount Boulevard and the technician works from your address outward. There are no distant corners to plan around here. Our posted hours are Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5, and shops should tell us when they open.

Every visit follows the same order. We bring the tools, test the system, explain the fault in plain terms and give the price before work starts. Then we run the repaired unit and check it works.

Artesian wells, dairy families and Pioneer Boulevard storefronts

Artesia took its name from natural flowing artesian wells. Portuguese and Dutch dairymen arrived in the 1920s, and Holy Family Catholic Church dates to 1929. The city incorporated on May 29, 1959.

Pioneer Boulevard is where the load sits now. Many Indian-owned stores and restaurants line it, in what the city officially calls the International and Cultural Shopping District.

Those businesses bring their own HVAC problems. Kitchens add heat and grease, so rooftop coils and filters clog faster than they do on a house. Retail shops want steady temperatures through long days. Door traffic lets cool air out with every customer.

Residential work is different. At about 10,100 people per square mile, homes sit close together, so condenser placement and noise matter. If your house still relies on a wall heater, or if your AC was added years later, we start by looking at how the air gets around.

Census ACS estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median build year at 1966, with about 76% of units from before 1980. About 68% are detached houses, 21% sit in buildings of two to 19 units, and about half of occupied homes are rented. Gas heats about 65% of homes and electricity 31%.

There is little room to build. The city’s General Plan calls Artesia primarily built out, with about 2.5 million square feet of non-residential space and an estimated 5,011 jobs as of 2010. Most HVAC work here means repairing or replacing what already stands.

Why call before visiting the Clarkdale Avenue permit counter?

Because the hours are short and city pages disagree on them. City Hall is at 18747 Clarkdale Avenue, and Building and Safety shares the main line, (562) 865-6262. One city page lists building permit hours as Monday to Thursday, 7:30 to 10:30 AM. Another says the division is run by a county employee. Call first and ask for Building and Safety. The city also takes building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permit applications through its OpenGov portal, where you can track review status online.

Most Artesia accounts use Southern California Edison for power and SoCalGas for gas, but your bill settles that. Business owners should also read their lease, since many make the tenant responsible for the rooftop unit and some leave it with the landlord.

Heating and cooling in Artesia, shop by shop and house by house

  • Commercial HVAC repair

A storefront on Pioneer cannot wait long when its one unit stops, so diagnosis comes first. Tell us your opening hours and who handles roof access on your block of the shopping district.

  • Rooftop unit service

Restaurant grease along Pioneer clogs rooftop coils and filters ahead of schedule. On a Pioneer Boulevard roof, ask for the coil and drain to be checked at each visit and the findings noted.

  • Commercial maintenance

Planned filter and coil visits fit a restaurant better than a failure in the dinner rush. Most of Artesia’s non-residential space was general commercial in 2010, so check who books the visits.

  • AC repair

Closely spaced homes here leave little room for airflow around a condenser, and heat builds up. About 76% of Artesia units predate 1980 and half of occupied homes are rented, so pass the findings to the owner.

  • Wall heater repair

Older wall heaters need a look at the pilot, the vent and the controls each fall. About 65% of occupied Artesia homes heat with utility gas, so check the carbon monoxide alarm while you are at it.

  • Furnace repair

No heat from a closet or attic furnace starts with tests of ignition, burners and blower. About 21% of Artesia units sit in small multi-unit buildings, so tell us which unit and who approves the work.

Around Artesia Park, South Street and the 183rd Street corridor

Check the city line first, because Cerritos wraps Artesia on three sides. The General Plan lists the Artesia Freeway and the 605 for regional access, and Pioneer Boulevard, Artesia Boulevard, 183rd Street and South Street for local trips.

Good landmarks to give us are City Hall and Artesia Park on Clarkdale Avenue, the Albert O. Little Community Center, A.J. Padelford Park, the Artesia Water Tower and the county library branch completed in 1963. A typical call is a warm dining room, a wall heater before winter, or a condenser squeezed against a fence.

Artesia questions

Can you service restaurant rooftop units on Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia?

Yes, rooftop units are part of our commercial work. Tell us the roof access, what the unit serves and your opening hours, so the work avoids your busiest stretch. The technician diagnoses it on the roof and gives you the price first. Check your lease, because it may name the tenant as responsible for repairs.

Is Artesia in the same permit office as Cerritos?

No. Artesia has its own Building and Safety contact at City Hall on Clarkdale Avenue, even though Cerritos wraps around the city on three sides. Check your address before you call. Reach Artesia at (562) 865-6262 and ask for Building and Safety, since the extensions and counter hours vary across city pages.

How often should an Artesia restaurant clean its rooftop coil?

Plan on checking it more often than you would for an office or a house, because cooking grease reaches rooftop coils and filters. Start with a visit each season, then adjust by what the technician finds. A clogged coil raises the head pressure and shortens compressor life, and that failure tends to come at the worst time.
