Heating and Cooling in Huntington Park, CA
Heating and cooling in Huntington Park is shaped by two facts: the city began as a 1906 streetcar suburb, and three of every four households rent. Proair works on the bungalows, small apartment buildings and Pacific Boulevard storefronts that history left behind.

The city is about 7.2 miles from our Paramount Boulevard shop, roughly 12 minutes without traffic. Density is the local difference. The 2020 census works out to about 18,246 people per square mile on roughly 3 square miles, so equipment sits in tight side yards, on small roofs and in shared closets. Quiet operation and access usually matter as much as capacity.
Prewar bungalows and Pacific Boulevard storefronts
Huntington Park’s housing is old even by southeast county standards. Census ACS estimates for 2020 to 2024 show about 27% of units built before 1940 and 54% before 1960. Only about 37% are detached houses, while about 32% sit in buildings of two to nine units. That mix means shared walls, tight clearances and systems that were added long after the plaster went up.

Pacific Boulevard adds a commercial layer. From the 1930s through the 1950s it was the busiest shopping district in the southeastern suburbs, with the 1930 Warner Theater and the Streamline Moderne Lane-Wells Building among its landmarks. Older storefronts like these often run a rooftop unit over one long, narrow room, where heat gathers at the back of the shop.
Rentals raise a separate issue. About 76% of occupied units are rented, and about 19% of occupied homes report using no heating fuel, compared with about 5% countywide. A dead wall heater in a rental can sit for a long time if nobody is sure who should call.
Work hours have a local limit as well. Published copies of the zoning code exempt construction and repair noise except from 7 PM to 7 AM and on Sundays and federal holidays, so confirm with the city and plan a rooftop replacement over a Pacific Boulevard shop for daytime.

Permits from the modular City Hall off Zoe Avenue
Huntington Park Building and Safety, part of Community Development, belongs to City Hall at 6550 Miles Avenue. A city notice says services are running from modular buildings in the parking lot, reached from Zoe Avenue, so check before you drive over. Hours are Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and City Hall is closed Friday.
The permit technician’s line is (323) 584-6271, and the main City Hall number is 323-582-6161. Before you sign for a replacement, get two names in writing: who pulls the mechanical permit, and who schedules the ECC-Rater (formerly called a HERS rater), the independent tester required on most change-outs.
Southern California Edison delivers electricity here and SoCalGas supplies gas. Check the name on your bill before applying for any rebate.
What do Florence Avenue apartments and storefronts need?
- AC repair
Older add-on systems in small units, where a tired capacitor or low charge shows up on the first hot week. Clear the side gate before we arrive.
- Ductless mini splits
One outdoor unit in a tight side yard can serve rooms where ducts were never an option. Just 37% of units here are detached houses.
- Wall heater repair
Often the only heat in a small rental. Pilot and valve faults are usually quick to find. About half of homes here use utility gas, so check the vent too.
- Commercial HVAC repair
For shops along Pacific Boulevard, where a failed unit in a long room can close the back half of the store. Have the roof key ready when you call.
- Rooftop unit service
Coils, belts, economizers and drains on the older roofs along the city’s commercial streets. Many sit behind tall parapets, so tell us the hatch or ladder location first.
- Air purifiers
Industrial Vernon borders the city. Where a small apartment has no ducts for a better filter, match a stand-alone purifier’s room rating to the actual room.

Roof hatch, gate code, tenant contact or parking. Dense blocks make these the first thing to settle.

We bring tools from South Gate, test the equipment and locate the cause.
Plain words, then a price
You hear the problem and the cost before work begins. Tenants and owners can both be on the call.
Run and verify
We test the system after the repair and point out anything else we noticed.

Reference points help. Salt Lake Park on Florence Avenue, Freedom Park, Raul R. Perez Memorial Park and the Metro A Line stations at Slauson and Florence all work. Huntington Park borders Vernon, Bell, Cudahy, Maywood and South Gate, and unincorporated Walnut Park lies to the south, so confirm your city before pulling a permit.
On the phone, Slauson Avenue, Alameda Street and Pacific Boulevard narrow things down fast. The 1925 California Theatre, now a fitness center, marks the boulevard as well as the Warner does. In a two-to-nine-unit building, give us the unit number and the rear entrance, because the equipment is often nowhere near the front door.
When heat builds, check LA County’s heat page for cooling sites. The county listed the Huntington Park Library at 6518 Miles Avenue as one during the August 2020 heat wave.

Huntington Park questions
Who pays to fix the heater in a Huntington Park rental?
It depends on the lease and state law. California Civil Code 1941.1 lists heating among habitability items, and cooling is not on that list. Report the problem to your landlord in writing and keep a copy. The lease, a tenant attorney or LA County’s tenant resources decide who pays. We can diagnose the fault for whoever books the visit.
Does the county’s 82-degree rental rule apply in Huntington Park?
As reported, that ordinance covers unincorporated county areas, and Huntington Park is its own incorporated city. Walnut Park, just to the south, is unincorporated, so the answer can change across one street. Check the city name on your property record, then check current county rules or ask a tenant attorney before relying on it.
Can you service a rooftop unit above a Pacific Boulevard storefront?
Yes, as long as we can reach the roof safely. Tell us where the hatch or ladder is, who holds the key and whether the landlord or the tenant handles repairs. Older buildings along Pacific Boulevard may have equipment behind a tall parapet, so a photo from the roof helps us plan before the visit.
Where do I get an HVAC permit in Huntington Park?
From Huntington Park Building and Safety, under Community Development, at 6550 Miles Avenue. A city notice places services in modular buildings reached from Zoe Avenue, and City Hall is closed Fridays. Call the permit technician at (323) 584-6271 first. Addresses in nearby Walnut Park go to the county, even with a similar mailing name.
