Heating and Cooling in Long Beach, CA
Heating and cooling in Long Beach depends on your distance from the water, because a Naples house and a North Long Beach house do not carry the same summer load. Proair repairs and replaces air conditioners, furnaces and ductwork across the city.

The center of Long Beach is about 12.3 miles from our Paramount Boulevard shop, roughly 20 minutes without traffic. The city held 466,742 people at the 2020 census, spread over about 51 square miles of land. Two things set it apart for HVAC work: summer fog at the shore against hotter afternoons inland, and a gas system run by Long Beach Utilities instead of SoCalGas.

Belmont Shore fog or Bixby Knolls heat: which load do you have?
Low clouds and fog often form overnight in summer and clear by afternoon, then a westerly sea breeze keeps the shore mild. Long Beach Airport, about 4 miles inland, is the official weather station, and its temperatures swing more than the immediate coast.
The airport averages a high near 83°F in August, yet the city still sees about 23 days a year above 90°F and about two above 100°F. A Belmont Shore house may run its AC only on those days. A North Long Beach house runs it far more often.
Near the water, salt attacks condenser fins and fasteners, so the outdoor unit can fail while the rest of the system looks fine. Oversizing is a risk there too: a big unit on a mild day shuts off too fast, which we call short cycling.
Inland, age is the issue. Bixby Knolls, California Heights, Los Cerritos and North Long Beach were subdivided from Rancho Los Cerritos after 1916, and the oldest houses on those tracts were not built around central air. Ducts added later take tight routes and leak at the joints.

Census survey figures for 2020 to 2024 list only 41% of units as detached, with 35% in buildings of two to 19 units and 18% in buildings of 20 or more. About 59% of households rent. The median unit dates to 1959, and 19% predate 1940.
Historic districts add a step. The city says exterior alterations there require a Certificate of Appropriateness, while interior work and routine repair stay outside it. Its August 2021 case log shows a California Heights condenser replacement approved as a minor case. Check the district map or call Planning at (562) 570-6194 before you place the unit.
Heating and cooling in Long Beach by house and neighborhood
- AC tune-ups for shore homes
Coil rinsing and a corrosion check suit Naples and Belmont Shore condensers, where sea air works on fins and fasteners. Read what a tune-up covers.
- AC repair inland
Weak capacitors tend to show up on the first 90°F afternoon, when an idle system suddenly works hard. North Long Beach sits well back from the shore’s sea breeze.
- AC replacement
The city’s express form covers same-size swaps up to 33,000 Btu/h in total. Bigger Long Beach systems go through plan review, so ask who files it.
- Furnace repair
A no-heat call can be the furnace or the gas supply, and the supply side here is Long Beach Utilities, so keep its emergency line handy.
- Duct repair
Rooms that never balance in a California Heights house often trace back to retrofit ducts. That is a historic district, so keep the fix indoors where you can.
- Ductless mini splits
A beach cottage with no ducts can cool one or two rooms without opening walls. With 59% of Long Beach households renting, get the owner’s approval first.

Long Beach Utilities gas, Edison power and the West Ocean permit counter
Mechanical permits run through the City of Long Beach Building and Safety Bureau. The Permit Center is at 411 West Ocean Boulevard, 2nd Floor, and (562) 570-7648 reaches both the counter and mechanical plan check. Express appointments run Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, from 9:00 AM on Wednesdays, and simpler jobs may qualify for the express mechanical permit application.
That form, revised in May 2026, covers a same-size HVAC replacement up to 33,000 Btu/h in total. A 3-ton system is 36,000 Btu/h, so it falls outside that line. It also requires verification by an ECC-Rater (formerly called a HERS rater) on change-outs.
Long Beach Utilities runs its own gas system, so SoCalGas phone numbers are the wrong starting point here. Its gas emergency line is (562) 570-2140. Electric service is generally Southern California Edison. Check the name on each bill.
I-405 splits the city north and south, I-710 follows the western edge to the port and I-605 serves the southeast. Long Beach Airport, Cal State Long Beach, El Dorado Regional Park and Bluff Park work as landmarks. Signal Hill, which Long Beach surrounds, is a separate city, so confirm your address first.

Long Beach questions
Who do I call if I smell gas at my Long Beach home?
Leave the building first and do not touch any switches. From outside, call 911 or Long Beach Utilities at (562) 570-2140, which runs the gas system here. Do not go back in until the utility clears the home. Once it does, we can inspect the furnace or wall heater and price the repair before starting.
Do homes near the beach in Long Beach need air conditioning?
Many get by with less cooling than inland homes, but the city still averages about 23 days a year above 90°F. The sea breeze handles most shore afternoons. A smaller system or a single mini split often fits Belmont Shore better than a large central unit, and a load calculation settles the size.
Does salt air shorten the life of a condenser in Naples or Belmont Shore?
Yes, salt air speeds up corrosion on coil fins, screws and electrical connections. The damage builds slowly, so a yearly look catches it before fins crumble and airflow drops. Rinsing the coil helps. When you replace a shore unit, ask what coil protection the quote includes and where the condenser will sit.
Can I use a SoCalGas furnace rebate with a Long Beach gas account?
Do not count on it. The SoCalGas 2026 Home Energy Efficiency Rebate is that utility’s own program, and your gas account here sits with Long Beach Utilities. Read the eligibility terms on the form, then ask Long Beach Utilities what it offers. The federal 25C credit also ended for property placed in service after 2025.
