Why Your Heat Pump Is Freezing Up
A heat pump freezing up is either running a normal defrost or showing a fault. A thin frost that clears in 5 to 15 minutes is normal. Thick ice that stays, or any ice on a mild South Gate afternoon, is a fault, usually from poor airflow, a low refrigerant charge or a failed defrost control.

How often does a heat pump frost up in South Gate?
Not often, and that is the honest starting point. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for downtown Los Angeles, the nearest long-record station we can cite, show a January low of 48.9°F and a December low of 48.2°F, with close to no freezing nights in the monthly averages. South Gate is not downtown, so treat those as a guide, not a local reading.
Frost can still form above freezing outdoors. In heating mode, the outdoor coil has to run colder than the air to pull heat from it. If the coil drops below 32°F while the air is damp, moisture freezes on the fins. A chilly, wet morning in the 30s or low 40s can do that. So can a clear night after rain. What it should not do is happen at 60°F.

Normal defrost or a fault?
Defrost is a built-in routine. A homeowner guide published on a DOE site says the unit briefly switches to cooling mode and sends warm refrigerant through the outdoor coil, and that defrost typically takes 5 to 15 minutes. Fans may stop or slow, and backup heat may come on to hold the indoor temperature.
That sequence surprises people. The outdoor fan stops, the unit gets loud with a whoosh as the valve shifts, and steam rolls off the coil. The steam is melting frost. It is not smoke. Ductless systems may also send some cool air from the indoor head during defrost.
| What you see | Normal defrost | Likely fault |
|---|---|---|
| Ice coverage | Thin, even frost | Thick ice, solid base, blocked fins |
| Duration | Clears in about 5 to 15 minutes | Still there after an hour |
| Weather | Cold, damp morning | Mild or warm afternoon |
| Outdoor fan | Stops briefly, then returns | Stopped for long stretches |
| Indoor air | Brief dip or mild coolness | Weak or cool air for hours |

How the unit decides to defrost
Manufacturer guidance says most systems look for frost every 30 to 90 minutes in heat mode, and a sensor on the outdoor coil feeds that decision. So one small sensor can ice a whole unit: if it reads warm while the coil freezes, no defrost starts.
Why is your heat pump freezing up when it should not?
Most real freeze-ups trace to one of these faults. In this mild climate, a frozen unit deserves more suspicion than it would in a cold state, because the weather is rarely the explanation.
- Dirty coil or blocked airflow: dust, leaves or a fence too close starve the outdoor coil of air.
- Dirty indoor filter: low airflow indoors raises pressure and throws off the whole cycle.
- Low refrigerant: a leak drops coil temperature far below normal.
- Failed defrost control or sensor: the unit never gets the signal to melt the frost.
- Stuck reversing valve: the part that switches modes cannot complete the defrost.
- Outdoor fan motor: a slow or dead fan lets frost build fast.
- Dripping water: a gutter or roof edge above the unit can refreeze on it.

What if the ice is on the indoor coil or copper line?
That is the South Gate version of this problem. Heat pumps cool too, and in this climate a summer freeze-up is at least as likely as a winter one. In cooling mode, the indoor coil is the cold side. Low airflow or a low charge freezes that coil, and ice creeps along the larger copper line. You get weak, warm air during a hot spell.
The fix path matches an AC freeze-up. Turn cooling off, run the fan to thaw, replace the filter and test again. If it refreezes, you have a leak or an airflow fault for heat pump repair.
Is it a heat pump or a plain AC?
A cooling-only AC sits idle on a cold morning, so an outdoor unit running in winter is a heat pump. Look for AUX or EM on the thermostat too. Then read the nameplate.
Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 show 27.3% of Bell Gardens homes and 31.6% of Bellflower homes heating with electricity, a share that includes wall heaters. Bell Gardens is also 78.8% rented, so renters should send the landlord a dated photo of the ice first.
What should you do when you find ice?
Wait through one full cycle
Give it an hour. If it was defrost, the coil clears and the fan restarts.
Check the simple things
Replace the filter, open the registers and clear leaves away from the coil.
Check overhead
Look for a gutter or drip line that lands on the unit, and for water pooling at the base.
Shut it off if ice stays
Turn the system off at the thermostat. Running a blocked coil strains the compressor.
Leave the ice alone
Do not chip at it. Fins and tubing bend easily, and tubing damage turns into a leak.
Call with details
Tell us the outdoor temperature, how long the ice has been there and what the fan is doing.
What does a technician test on a frozen unit?
The ice comes off first, because sensors and pressures mean little through a block of it.
- Confirm the thermostat mode, the fan setting and any AUX or EM light.
- Check the filter, indoor airflow and the clearance around the outdoor coil.
- Test the outdoor fan motor, capacitor and contactor with a meter.
- Read refrigerant pressures, and search for a leak if the charge is low.
- Check the coil sensor and control, then force a defrost and time it.
- Explain the cause, give the price, repair it, then run heat and defrost again.

What does a frozen heat pump cost to fix?
Fixr’s January 2026 national cost guide puts a typical heat pump repair between $150 and $650, with these ranges for the bigger parts. They are published figures, not Proair prices. We quote ours once the fault is found.
| Repair | Published range | Why it comes up here |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor | $100 to $400 | Outdoor fan slow or will not start |
| Refrigerant leak | $200 to $1,500 | Low charge, ice in patches |
| Reversing valve | $350 to $700 | Defrost cannot complete |
| Compressor | $800 to $2,500 | Long running with a blocked coil |
Age decides the big ones. The CEE homeowner guide gives about 15 years as a typical lifespan, and Fixr suggests weighing replacement past 10 to 15. Price a new heat pump beside any compressor quote. A new outdoor unit brings the 2025 Energy Code into the job, so the connected ducts get sealed and verified by an ECC-Rater (formerly called a HERS rater).
What keeps the ice from coming back?
- Change or wash filters about every 90 days on a ducted system and at least monthly on a ductless head, as CEE advises.
- Use Heat in winter and Cool in summer. CEE warns that Auto mode can swing between the two.
- Leave the fan on Auto. CEE says continuous indoor fan operation can hurt heat pump performance.
Regular care prevents most of this. Keep the filter clean, keep plants trimmed back, and book a yearly check that covers charge, defrost operation and coil condition. Our AC tune-up visit is the moment to ask for those heat pump checks. We serve Bell Gardens and nearby cities from our Paramount Boulevard shop. Planning ahead? Frost is routine, lasting ice is not
Thin frost that melts in minutes is the machine doing its job. Ice that stays, ice on a mild day or ice on the indoor coil means something upstream has failed, and the compressor pays if the system keeps running. Shut it off, note what the fan is doing and call us. We will find the fault, explain it in plain words and price the repair first.

Heat Pump Freezing Up questions
Is it normal for a heat pump to steam in South Gate winter weather?
Yes, during defrost. Warm refrigerant melts frost on the outdoor coil, and on a cool, damp South Gate morning the melt can lift off as steam. It lasts minutes and the fan comes back on. Real smoke, a burning smell or a noise that does not stop is different, so shut the system off and call.
Should I pour hot water on a frozen heat pump?
No. Hot water can shock the coil, wet the electrical parts and refreeze at the base. It also hides the reason the ice formed. Turn the system off and let the ice melt on its own, or run a cycle if defrost still works. If ice returns, a technician needs to find the airflow, charge or control fault.
How often should a heat pump go into defrost?
There is no fixed number. Defrost frequency depends on outdoor temperature, humidity and how hard the system is working, as DOE field studies describe. In Southeast LA, most days need none. Several defrost cycles in a row on a mild, dry day suggest a sensor, charge or airflow problem and are worth a service call.
Should I cover my South Gate heat pump for the rainy season?
No. The CEE homeowner guide says to avoid covering a heat pump, because the coil needs open airflow to pull in heat. A South Gate unit faces rain, not snow, so the useful fix is keeping roof runoff off the coil. Repair the gutter, or ask about moving the unit if a drip line lands on it.
How long does a frozen heat pump take to thaw with the system off?
Allow several hours for an indoor coil, longer for a thick block. Keep the compressor off, run only the fan and put towels near the air handler. Outdoor ice clears fastest once a working defrost runs, and a South Gate afternoon helps. If ice returns, stop thawing and have the cause found.
